the color yellow
it was a normal day at work. nothing was out of place and I was approaching the lull where I was beginning to enter autopilot. i grabbed a crate of lemons to take them to the refrigerator, just as I always did. I stepped outside, and as I made my way next door, the sun shone brightly upon their skin.
how miraculous!
in those few instants, the same lemons that I had seen hundreds and hundreds of times previously suddenly seemed brand new. I looked at them deeply and carefully, examining their shape, size, and texture, like a babe seeing something for the very first time.
but what truly captivated me was their color. It was the most brilliant yellow I had ever seen. their sheen was borderline blinding. it was as if I had never seen a more brilliant color, and I even thought to myself, “If this is the last color I ever see in this lifetime, I would be perfectly content with that.”
I saw sunflowers. I saw youth. I saw happiness. I saw the sun. I saw spring. I saw an infinitude of things in those few moments, and an overflow of gratitude emerged within me. how fortunate was I to have been able to witness such a profound and intimate moment with something so ordinary. but the experience was anything but.
I now have a new favorite color. the color yellow.
actionable prompt:
observe something out in nature that you’ve seen many times before. look at it with brand new eyes, as if you’ve never gazed upon it before, or as if this is the last time you’ll ever do it. be like a child. see its finest details and, if you can, touch and smell it. you’ll find that beauty is everywhere if only you choose to look at the world like that.
